History

Villa Imperiale was built at the end of the 19 th century as a home for the well known and wealthy Berlingeri family.
The east wing was built first and after, the centre with the cellars. In the 20’s it was owned by Antonio Berlingeri and his sister Teresa.

Later it was inherited by Antonio’s son Achille Berlingeri (1893 – 1967). Achille married
a girl from Milan who was immediately attracted to Liguria; it was due to her choice that the villa became a summer boarding house for tourists.

During these years the Riviera Ligure became very popular with tourists, offering new proposals and places of entertainment : Palace Hotel, private beach Club and Premuda ballroom were built.
The year 1933 marked the beginning of Hotel Imperiale.
Straight after the 2nd world war, Stella & Achille continued to run the Villa.
When they died, leaving no heirs, the Villa was given to the Berninzoni non-profit making company who also ran the nursey school in Spotorno.

The company was later merged with Siccardi Services who are the present owners.
Later on, the Hotel was run by the Pelizzoni family and then by the Cappello family until October 2004 when Terredimare Group took over.

After a thorough renovation which emphasizes its original structure, Villa Imperiale has become a charming Hotel and refined restaurant.

COMBINATIONS OF LIFE

It’s 1934, Teresa Berlingeri isn’t very pleased with the decision made by her nephew Achille and Stella his wife. She is used to peace and quit and is worried about the confusion and loss of intimacy that would take place when the Villa becomes Hotel Imperiale.
Therefore she decides to leave her beautiful room with the balcony (now room 102) and look for somewhere more secluded.
She chooses Prelo, surrounded by orchards where she rents a room at the beginning of Via alla Rocca from Maria Rosa (nicknamed Marinin).
Marinin gives Teresa her best room, their room, and she & her husband move out to the store room. By doing this, Marinin’s daughter Angela aged 8, can go daily to the hotels kitchen to collect leftovers for the chickens.
The cook, jokingly but in a menacing tone, asks little Angela “who are you? ” and she replies “I’m the owner of Mrs Teresa’s house!”
Angela will remember those episodes later in life, when already married to Enrico and with a young son, she starts work as a waitress in the Hotel in 1950.
Marinin & Angela are the grandmother and mother of Giuseppe Camia, one of the partners
Of Terredimare, the society which now manages the hotel.
In 1969 the Villa becomes property of the non profit making co. and one of the members of the administration committee is Enrico Camia, Angela’s husband and Giuseppe’s father.

RESTYLING THE VILLA
The Villa was built and enlarged in different periods.
The east wing dated back to the end of the 19 century, has a first floor and a superior floor, while the ground floor was used as utility rooms, kitchen and store rooms.

Subsequently the central part was built together with the cellars. The heights vary slightly in respect to the original building but the 5,40 mt. height was maintained for the fist floors.

In 1950 Achille has the west wing build for his personal living, as the remaining part of the villa become the hotel.

In 1965 the administrator of the Berninzoni nursery school, (heir of the Villa) adds on a third attic floor while rebuilding the roof.

Nowadays the Villa has 3 sections facing towards the sea.
The outside architecture reflects the Neoclassic style with its high windows, columns, balconies and designed pillars.
Inside the building you can notice the different periods of restyling, especially in the older part which features an original vaulted ceilings.

During a careful restoration in 2005 fully respecting the original structure many ancient parts have been uncovered.

In the reception, on the ground floor an ancient well was discovered and restored. The well was probably used to supply water for the kitchens.

On the first floor the false ceiling panels were removed, discovering the old 5 metres hight vaulted ceilings and interesting frescos.

The height permitted the realization of prestigious Suite rooms; arranged on 2 different levels which vary in size from 40 to 60 sq.m ; with a night area upstairs and a living area down stairs.

On the first and second floors the typical Genoese granite floors, hidden by other covering floors, was saved and polished and also the original wooden doors and windows were replaced with their fashionable handles.

We wish we have managed to create a charming and comfortable ambience and also we wish you to have a enjoyable stay.
